The mother's expression reminds me of me when I'm woken from a sound sleep in the morning. Usually by hungry children, too! But, maybe the mama is not feeling well, instead. This is all she can manage, breakfast in bed...

All I can think is poor thing!
This is how I imagine I look when I wake up with a headache. UGH!
I am going to say that the cup beside her is coffee and she is hoping that the headache goes away soon because eventually she will have to get up and clean the crumbs that are now on the floor from her daughter's breakfast in bed:)
Well I'm going to say I wish I looked that good when I woke up! No way would I ever allow a portrait of me in the morning!
